New: Reading an Opening Range That Formed on a Gap

Untested boundaries get half size or no size. That rule exists mainly for one configuration: a period ending while price is still printing new extremes, so the measurement stops for reasons of the clock rather than because the auction resolved. The running record orb trading setups beekeeping for beginners holds of these sessions shows the obvious consequence, that a boundary set on the final candle of an opening range has never been offered back to the market, and a trade built on it has no history, no retest and no volume behind it.

Recognising It Before the Period Ends

The signature is a new extreme inside the last two minutes of the range period. It is visible while it happens, so the decision can be made before the boundary is even drawn. Marking the time of the final extreme is one extra field and it is the field that identifies this shape.

Why the Clock Is Arbitrary

Fifteen minutes is a convention, not a property of the market. When a move is still developing at minute fifteen, cutting it there produces a boundary that means nothing to anyone except traders using the same convention. The move continues. The rectangle just stops recording it.

That is the argument for a 30 minute range on these particular mornings. It is not a general argument for longer ranges, it is a response to a specific condition.

The Break Happens Immediately

Price is already at the edge, so the break of the boundary usually occurs within a minute of the period closing. There is no waiting, no structure forming, and no time to size the position properly. That speed is the practical problem, because the trade appears fully formed and the arithmetic has not been done.

The Failure Shape

Momentum that has run for fifteen minutes uninterrupted frequently exhausts shortly afterwards. Taking the break at that point is entering at the end of a move rather than the start of one, and the resulting failed breakout tends to retrace through the whole range rather than stalling at the boundary. Stops placed just inside the level are not far enough away.

What to Use Instead

Two options with some evidence behind them. Wait for the first pullback and use the low of that pullback as the reference instead of the range extreme. Or extend to a 30 minute range and accept a later entry with a tested boundary. Both give up the fastest part of the move, which on this configuration is also the part most likely to be given straight back.
