New: Reading an Opening Range That Formed on a Gap

Opening Range Desk

A Range Made Almost Entirely of One Wick

Nothing about a thirty point number says where price actually traded, and on a morning when twenty six of those points are a single wick, the figure is close to useless. The measured opening range and the range price was willing to accept are two different things, and only one of them is drawn on the chart. The way these are classified at orb trading setups beekeeping for beginners separates the two on purpose, since a boundary set by one spike behaves nothing like one tested four times before the opening bell was ten minutes old, and the setups built on each are different trades.

Measure the Body Separately

Record two numbers on these mornings: the full high to low, and the high to low of the candle bodies. On an ordinary session they sit within a few percent of each other. On a wick dominated one they can differ by half. The gap between them is the measurement that says which kind of morning this is, and it takes ten seconds.

The body range is where the volume sat. That is the price other participants have a position at, and it is the level that produces a reaction on a retest.

Why a Spike Boundary Is Weak

A single print at an extreme means one order cleared a thin book and nothing came back to defend it. There is very little resting interest at that price because almost nothing traded there. A break of that level therefore clears nobody out, and the follow through a breakout depends on has no fuel behind it.

Where the Stop Goes Instead

Placing a stop loss just beyond a spike high can put it a long way from the entry, which either cuts the position size to nothing or, more commonly, gets ignored and the trade is sized as though the range were normal. Neither is acceptable. The workable answer is to size off the body extreme and treat the spike as an outlier, or to skip the morning entirely.

Skipping is a real option and it is the underused one. A range that has to be reinterpreted before it can be traded is a range the rules did not anticipate.

The News Spike Version

A wick like this often comes from a scheduled release landing in premarket or right at the cash open, and the tail is the market rejecting a price it briefly printed. That has a different meaning from a liquidity sweep in a quiet market, even though both draw the same shape. Checking the calendar separates them in about five seconds.

Record It as Its Own Type

Tag these sessions in the log. A quarter of them collected together answers whether the wick boundary or the body boundary produced the better level, on that instrument, at that timeframe. Everyone has an opinion about this and almost nobody has a count, which leaves the choice being made on whichever example is most recent.
